About Bhakra Nangal Dam

Bhakra Dam is a 226 meter high concrete gravity dam, located on the Satluj river in Bilaspur. The 518 meter long dam is located 15 kilometers away from Nangal city. Another dam, called the Nangal Dam is located downstream of Bhakra Dam and both of them are jointly known as Bhakra-Nangal Dam. Its reservoir is known as Govind Sagar, which is also the third largest reservoir in India. This dam is one of the highest gravity dam in the world.

How to reach

By Road : The dam is 115 kilometers away from Chandigarh. Road transportation is available from almost all major cities in and around North India.
By Rail : Railway Stations are there around Chandigarh and Ambala which connect this place with the rest of India. 
By Air : Nearest International Airport is at Chandigarh. Cabs are available from here as well.

  • Tourists can visit this place throughout the year. However, during monsoon, there are chances of flooding as huge amount of water gets released from the dam.

  • Eateries and hotels are located in Nangal city or at Bhakra, where tourist can refresh themselves. North Indian and Punjabi dishes are quite common here.

  • - The enormous height of the superstructure of the dam is awe-inspiring in itself. It is indeed an example of the engineering marvel of the age. 
    - Govind Sagar Lake : It is the main reservoir of this dam. It is also the third largest reservoir in India, which is spread on an area measuring around 90 square kilometers. 
    - The dam generates huge amount of power which is distributed among the states like- Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and Delhi. The irrigation facility of this dam keeps the lands of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan irrigated. 


  • Activities
  • - It will take you an entire day to make a complete trip of this dam and its adjoining lake. Both the dams of Bhakra and Nangal are located a few kilometers apart. 
    - Photography is another thing that you can resort to. Also you can indulge yourself in some family picnic. There are a number of good spots around this place.
