About Dhankar Gompa

Dhankar Gompa is a village and a Buddhist temple located in the district of Lahaul and Spiti. It is situated at an altitude of 3,900 metres in the Spiti valley, which is located just above the Dhankar village. The place is more famous as a Gompa (a  Buddhist fortification of culture and learning). This Gompa overlooks the confluence of Spiti and Pin rivers and is considered as one of the most spectacular settings for building a Gompa. Dhankar was once the capital of the Spiti kingdom during the 17th century.

How to reach

By Road : To reach this place one has to hire a cab from either Tabo or Kaza. However, it is quite economical to travel from Schichling village. 
By Rail : Nearest stations are located at Chandigarh and Pathankot. Trains from the major cities in India do make a stop here. 
By Air : Nearest airport is at Kullu airport which is located 113 kilometres away. Cabs and buses are easily available from Kullu.

  • When to visit
  • Tourists can visit this place during the summers. However, during the monsoon, the roads leading to this small village gets inundated. So it is advisable to avoid this place during monsoon.

  • What to Eat
  • There are not many good eateries in Dhankar. Tourists are advised to pack some food either from Kullu or Kaza.

  • Attractions
  • Dhankar Village : It is a small village located just along the mountains. The houses are built on the rocky surface and from a distance the village appears really beautiful. 
    Dhankar Monastery : It is the main attraction here. This monastery as a fort monastery in the Central Tibetan Pattern. Owing to its old age, the World Monuments Fund declared this site as one of the most 100 endangered sites in the world. 
    Dhankar Fort : This an old fort which was used as a shelter during invasions. The fort was built as a defence against powerful attacks and today it stands as a witness to numerous such incidents.

  • Activities
  • - Tourists can trek to the Dhankar Lake which is situated 3 kilometres away at a height of 4,517 metres. They can also visit the Lahlung village which is also home to one of the oldest temples of the Sipti valley. 
    - Tourists can also engage in photography. There are a number of beautiful locations in and around Dhankar where you can find a perfect spot to click the best pictures.
