About Hamta

Hamta is a mountain pass, situated at an altitude of 4,270 metres. This small corridor between Lahaul and Kullu Valley is a part of the Pir Panjal Range. This mountain pass got its name from the village named Hamta, which lies just below the Setham Village. This pass is generally frequented by local shepherds and adventure seekers, who frequent this region for trekking. According to Hindu mythology, this route was taken by Yudhisthira (a legendary ruler, who was known for his truthfulness) to ascend to heaven, so it is also known as the road to heaven.


How to reach

By Road : Manali is the nearest major town and staging area for those who wishes to visit this pass. Manali is easily accessible from cities like- Delhi, Chandigarh and Shimla. 
By Rail : Nearest railway station is the Joginder Nagar Railway Station, which is located 166 kilometres away. 
By Air : Bhuntar Airport is the nearest one, located 52 kilometres way. Flights from almost all the major airports connect to this place.

  • When to visit
  • June to September is the best time to visit this place. The weather during this period remains relatively calm. During the winters, the weather becomes quite unpredictable.

  • Touridts are advised to carry their own foods. Tourists can collect foods from Manali. Adequate amounts of dry foods should be kept at disposal, while you are visiting this place.

  • Attractions
  • Manali : Apart from being the staging area for visiting Hamta Pass, Manali is also a nearby attraction that tourists should explore. The beauty of this place is often compared with that of Switzerland. 
    Chika : Situated at an altitude of 3,100 metres, this place is perfect definition of beauty, which is decorated with abundant vegetation, enormous rocks, grasslands, geogeous rivers and swift rivers. 
    Balu Ka Ghera : It literally means- “an area surrounded by sands”. It is an ideal camping location, from whwre one can have a view of the beautiful meadows. From here, one can even have a view of the snow-capped mountains.

  • Activities
  • - Trekking is the most popular activity in this region. Apart from that, groups of travellers also engage in picnic and evening revelries. 
    - Photography is another activity that you can engage yourself into. However, do carry a good set of camera along with you. One might not want to miss out the best of the natural beauty.
