About Kondapalli Fort

Built in the 14th century, Kondapalli Fort, also known as Kondapalli Kota, is located to the west of Vijayawada city in the main hill range known as Kondapalli in the Krishna district.  The Kondapalli fort once served as a training camp of the British Empire. It is also the last patch of pristine forest in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh – the Kondapalli Reserve Forest.


How to reach

By Air : The nearest airport is in Hyderabad, 262 kms away. From there, this place can be reached by private vehicle or state vehicle. 
By Rail : The nearest railway station is in Vijaywada, 24 kms away. From there, this place can be reached by hiring cars or taxis. 
By Road : This place is about 16 kms away from Vijaywada which is well-connected with proper road network with the rest of the country as well as the state.

  • Attractions
  • This place is popular in Andhra Pradesh owing to its few attractive points. They are- 

    • The fort, which has a very picturesque sight, has three successive entry gates. The main entrance gate is called the ‘Dargha Darwaja’ built with single block of granite. It is 12 feet (3.7 m) wide and 15 feet (4.6 m) high. Its name is derived from the tomb or dargha of Gulab Shah, who was killed in battle here. 
    • At the far end of the fort there is the Tanisha Mahal or Palace, perched on a crest between two hills. This palace has many chambers on the ground floor and a huge hall on the upper floor. 
    • Kondapalli toys are carved out of locally available special light softwood known as Poniki. These toys are brightly coloured and adorned with beautiful designs of animals, birds, fruits and vegetables, mythological and religious figures. These are also known as Kondapalli Bommalu in telugu, and are the speciality of this place. 
    • An English barrack still stands in the fort area, which has eight large rooms, apart from a house in an annex. An English cemetery is also seen in the fort.

  • This place provides light and sound guided tours of the entire fort, and is also a popular trekking destination for tourists.
