About Renukaji

Renukaji is not an ordinary tourist place which only flaunts its natural beauty. Renukaji is one of those rarer sites in Himachal which combines the best of natural grandeur and ecstasy with religious fervour. This place occupies a significant position in the history as well as it saw a number of invasions as well. The entire significance of this place lies in a lake from which this whole town derieves its name.


How to reach

By Road : Nearest town is located at Nahan, which is 22 kilometres away. Apart from that, Renukaji is well connected with major cities like Delhi via NH-73.
By Rail : Ambala is the nearest railway station located 120 kilometres away. Buses and cabs are available from the station as well.
By Air : Chandigarh is the nearest airport located 113 kilometres away. Cabs are available from the terminus as well.

  • When to visit
  • The months between June to October is the best time to visit this place. During the winter, the temperature of this place goes down drastically.

  • What to Eat
  • Some good restaurants and eateries are there around the lake which serves local dishes. Most of the dishes that are served here are vegetarian dishes.

  • Attractions
  • Jamu Peak : Jamu Peak is located directly above the lake. It is widely believed that Rishi Jamadagini meditated here. From the temple complex, one can get an excellent view of the lake.
    Parashuram Tal and Renuka Temple : At the base of the lake, a large pool is located where Parashuram wished to spend all his eternity at the feet of his mother. The original temple of Renukaji is also located here which was reportedly built by the Gurkha forces overnight. 
    Renuka Lake : The principal attraction in the town, this lake has some stories of its own. It is believed that when the evil Sahasarjuna killed the sage Jamadagini and tried to kidnap his wife Renuka, she jumped into this lake to save her honour. Then the Gods rrestored her life and from that time onwards this lake is treated as the embodiment of the pious lady. 
    Mini Zoo :  A mini zoo is located right across the lake and it houses Asiatic Lions, spotted Deer, Himalayan Bear and Nilgai. One can boat across the lake to reach this zoo.

  • - The view of the sunset from this place is really enthralling. During the sunset, one should try to see the reflection of the sunset in the waters of the lake. 
    - Renukaji provides an excellent opportunity for outdoor photography. From the natural beauty of the lake and the peak to the activities of the animals, a lots of things are there to be captured by the lens.
