About Simbalbara Sanctuary

Simbalbara Sanctuary is another place to see and experience the activities of the wild world, up close and personal. Located in the Sirmour district and around 100 kilometres from nahan, this sanctuary is situated eight in the middle of thick Sal forest. This peaceful, isolated wildlife habitat is an amazing place to spend a day as it is set against a river, dense forest and deep green valleys. From here, one can catch a glimpse of the Puruwal Valley. Reestablished in 1974, this sanctuary is the home to a number of rare and velnerable animal species.


How to reach

By Road :Nahan is the nearest major town from where one can hire a bus or a cab to visit this place. Nahan is around 100 kilometres from this place. 
By Rail :Nearest station is at Kalka. From here, state-run buses are available at regular intervals. 
By Air :Nearest airports are located in Shimla and Chandigarh. From Chandigarh, the distance is 150 kilometres. Cabs are available from both the places.

  • When to visit
  • Best time to visit this place is during the months of April to September. During this time, the weather remains quite pleasant and condusive for touring this place.

  • What to Eat
  • There are small food stalls which predominantly sell snakc, beverages and some lighter meals. However, tourists are not allowed to carry food inside the sanctuary.

  • Attractions
  • This sanctuary is home to- Indian Muntjac, Goral and Crested Porcupine, Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear and Rhesus Macaque. During the times of British rule, this forst used to be the hunting ground fro the local kings and princes. 
    At Simbalabara, one can also get to observe a lot of birds and their activities. Carry a decent binocular and have some patience. 
    From here, one can also visit places like- Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary and Gurudwara Paonta Sahib. Both of these places are located quite close to this sanctuary.

  • Activities
  • - Here you can indulge yourself in activities like - trekking, forest safari and camping. Owing to its extensive green cover, Simbalbara Sanctuary offers magnificent opportunity for forest safari. 
    - Nature photography is another activity that you can indulge yourself into. Here you will find wild animals moving about freely in their natural habitat.
