About INS Kurusura

The first of its kind in the whole south Asia, INS Kurusura Submarine is a Soviet built-I-641 class Submarine , inducted into the Indian Navy on 18, December 1969 and was decommissioned on 28, February 2001 after 31 years of glorious service to the nation. It had served as a warship, a trading ship, weaponry,and had actively took part in the Indo-Pak war of 1971. It is the world's first submarine museum established and opened for public in the year 2002.


How to reach

By Air : The nearest airport is in Visakhapatnam which is connected with flights from major cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and the rest of the country. From the airport, taxis or auto rickshaws can be hired to reach this submarine museum. 
By Rail : Visakhapatnam has its own railway station which is properly connected with the rail networks of the rest of the country. From the railway station, this museum can be reached by hiring a car. 
By Road : Visakhapatnam is well-connected to all the major cities by road. There are regular tourist as well as state buses which provide services to and from Visakhapatnam.

  • There are a few eateries around here, but one can also get good options in the main city of Visakhapatnam.

  • The services of six guides and one curator have been hired from the retired employees of Navy to educate about history of the Submarine to visitors. It has torpedoes on its front, two of them which are still loaded. The inside of the submarine has kitchens, rooms, washrooms used by the naval officers during its running days and a exhibit room showcasing the glory of this warship. Despite being a decommissioned submarine, she still receives the navy's "Dressing Ship" honour, which is usually awarded only to active ships.

  • There isn't much of a activity around here except touring the nearby places like vuda park, rk beach, rushikinda beach, indira gandhi zoo park, matsyadarshini aquarium, etc.
